Connecting in the Cloud: How to Handle Air Handling Noise

Many classrooms are quiet enough--but some aren't. This presentation focuses on a major culprit: air handling noise. This presentation will describe: the working relationship with Facilities at his college; beginning to take sound pressure level (SPL) readings while surveying all classrooms on campus using the Learning Space Rating System (LSRS); as well as steps taken in collaboration to ameliorate background noise levels stemming from HVAC systems, including related expenses. 

Participants will: 

  • understand how to take sound pressure level (SPL) readings and what they measure. 

  • be able to interact more knowledgeably with HVAC professionals, both within their institution's facilities group as well as outside contractors. 

  • as a group will experience an increased sense of hopefulness about improving listening conditions in spaces generally, especially learning spaces on their campus.
